Lead Systems Engineer (Remote)

Resp & Qualifications

PURPOSE: 
Defines, designs and develops system requirements.  Performs trade-off analysis of performance, life-cycle cost, risk, producibility, and other system or program requirements.  Assesses architecture and current hardware limitations, defines and designs system specifications, and evaluates input/output processes and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility.  Coordinates design of subsystems and integration of total system.  Defines system support requirements to include monitoring, capacity, staffing and patching/updating.  Analyzes and resolves program support deficiencies.  Conducts independent technical investigations in systems design.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Installs, tunes, upgrades, troubleshoots, and maintains all computer systems relevant to the supported applications including all necessary tasks to perform operating system administration, user account management, disaster recovery strategy and networking configuration.
     
  • Develop and implement techniques to prevent system problems, troubleshoots incidents to recover services, and support the root cause analysis.
     
  • Evaluates new systems by performing in-depth tests, including end-user reviews. Researches software and related products to support recommendations and purchasing. Determines systems integration issues by evaluating components; developing and completing performance tests; analyzing test data; studying project requirements; analyzing user and potential user input; evaluating similar and related products and systems. Develop system automation and system integration of business processes.  
     
  • Improves engineering job knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
     
  • Acts as a mentor for junior and senior team members.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Leads a team utilizing a matrix management system.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Level: Bachelor's Degree Information Technology or Computer Science OR in lieu of a Bachelor's degree, an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required in addition to the required work experience.

Licenses/Certifications Preferred:
ITIL Foundations v3 within 180 Days.

Experience: 8 years proven success overseeing the design, development, and implementation of software systems and applications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
APPLICATION SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATION AND OPERATIONS:

  • Experience with complex system planning, configuration, and implementation, as well as the monitoring and maintenance of systems.
     
  • Serve as a Tier-1 IT emergency responder, providing phone/virtual support.
     
  • Ad-hoc support for standard IT tasks, such as patching, configuration, user support, and system builds for Windows systems.
     
  • Proficiency in managing virtualized infrastructure using VMware or similar tools.
     
  • Experience with architecture planning, virtualization, distributed infrastructure, storage networks, and load balancing.
     
  • Execute tasks related to tickets and service requests for advanced to complex server-side activities and provide escalation support for compute tickets.
     
  • Oversee the maintenance of application and server software, such as updates and upgrades.
     
  • Analyze business needs; partner with leaders across the organization to research and recommend solutions which balance business needs and risk mitigation.
     
  • Oversee the configuration and customization of application systems.
     
  • Define, run, and review reports on applications performance and event anomalies; ensure internal adjustments are made substantial gaps documented and elevated to management.
     
  • Develop and maintain appropriate applications documentation, including current design and operation.

STANDARDS AND POLICY ADMINISTRATION:

  • Monitor and continually review existing applications systems to ensure they are designed to comply with established standards and to empower business operations.
     
  • Develop and maintain support policies and procedures.
     
  • Assist with the development and management of application/database security policies and systems, such as web applications and SQL server security.
     
  • Assist with the development and management of file exchange policies and systems, such as FTP.
     
  • Lead the planning for and supporting disaster recovery and business continuity initiatives.

VENDOR COORDINATION AND RELATIONS:

  • Establish and manage relations with external partners and application vendors including installation and repair of services.
     
  • Conduct product and vendor research, and present recommendations to team and/or management.
     
  • Maintain service contracts and licensing; effectively negotiate with outside parties; escalate issues as needed.


GOOD KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND/OR ABILITIES IN MOST OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Claims processing technologies, such as QNXT and Facets.
     
  • Enterprise applications integration and business process automation.
     
  • Data integration strategy best practices, such as ETL, Kafka.
     
  • Document management and collaboration platforms, such as SharePoint, Teams and Office 365.
     
  • Network technologies such as VPN, Wireless, and SSL Certificates.
     
  • Scripting language technology, such as PowerShell, Python and T-SQL.
     
  • Compute environments, such as server hardware, storage and virtualization.
     
  • Microsoft server operating systems and core services, such as Active Directory.
     
  • Cloud technologies, such as Kubernetes, Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.
     
  • Apache Airflow.
     
  • DevSecOps automation.
     
  • Agile and Value Streams.
     
  • Services and APIs.
     
  • Troubleshooting performance issues and root causes.
     
  • Monitoring systems and best practices.
     
  • Principles of application design and best practices.
     
  • Knowledge of ITIL and ITSM governance concepts.
     
  • Knowledge of project management practices.
     
  • Strong and clear communication skills, including listening, verbal, written, customer service, meeting facilitation, and presentations.
     
  • Ability to clearly articulate policies, instructions, goals, and objectives.
     
  • Able to convey appropriate level of detail effectively to all levels of the organization including non-technical staff and leadership.
     
  • Able to simplify and present concepts in an easily understood way.
     
  • Proactively and appropriately communicates status and needs.
     
  • Ability to author policies, document risks, and propose solutions to information technology management and senior leadership.
     
  • Possess a high degree of initiative and motivation.
     

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of programming languages and web based technologies.
     
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
     
  • Ability to collaborate to solve technical problems across teams.
     
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
     
  • Must be able to meet established deadlines and handle multiple customer service demands from internal and external customers, within set expectations for service excellence. Must be able to effectively communicate and provide positive customer service to every internal and external customer, including customers who may be demanding or otherwise challenging.
     

Salary Range: $106,200 - $210,925
