Reporting to the Manager of Financial Accounting, this position is responsible for determining priorities, developing controls and procedures for staff to follow. Solutions to problems encountered require timely, effective, and in depth analysis of financial data as well as research of circumstances, facts and issues which cause financial trending to differ significantly from the norm or anticipated results. Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Coordinates, schedules and reviews detail activities for the monthly Financial Close process. Reviews and verifies the accuracy and efficacy of required journal entries and related support for various financial transactions. Responsible for ensuring the timely completion and integrity of monthly general ledger interfaces, including the implementation of corrective action plans. . Oversees the investigation and timely resolution of problems that arise during the close process. Establishes and maintains standard operating procedures and controls. Works with staff to develop and document procedures for the Department. Assists the Manager in the development and implementation of internal accounting controls, analytical tools and reports. Investigates and assists in the resolution of unusual trends or potential issues to assure data integrity and identify business and accounting issues.
Assists and supports the Manager with the coordination of the annual financial audit. Responsible for ensuring that requests from the external auditors are met timely and efficiently in a manner that allows for a smooth audit process. Assists the auditors by educating them on significant departmental and business practices as well as providing interpretive analysis of financial information.
Prepares the Quarterly Finance Tie out reports and oversees the AR aging analysis, which is needed for Statutory reporting purposes. . . Responsible for the completion of all required reports by due dates. Responds to on-demand reporting and analysis; plots and develops strategies for enhanced processing and reporting results; coordinates with Manager and Director in responding to external concerns regarding related issues. Provides technical support and coordination between staff with respect to all internal reporting and financial analysis.
Supervises assigned staff providing guidance, support, coaching, recognition and feedback consistent with CareFirst, Inc. Human Resource policies and practices. Prioritizes and assigns routine work and projects; resolves employee issues and provides developmental instructions. Motivates staff towards accomplishing goals and monitors work of subordinates. Trains and evaluates principle subordinates. Suggests improvements in processes to increase effectiveness of team. Responsible for modeling high standards of honesty and integrity in all matters relating to code of conduct. Assists in interviewing and hiring selected applicants for positions in Financial Accounting. Completes and provides input to performance reviews and promotion recommendations for staff.
Support to other departments and corporate initiatives is provided by: 1.) detailed and comprehensive data and analysis related to revenue, care and accounts receivables is provided to various departments to support required corporate reporting processes. 2.) Supervises the planning, design, implementation, and development of functional specifications and testing of new accounting systems purchased externally or developed internally. Work with project managers and implementation teams to communicate the needs of the Financial Accounting Department and to emphasize the impact of proposed changes on our ability to produce accurate financial information. Support and test upgrades on new system releases.
The incumbent is responsible for supervising 4 professional exempt accounting associates.
Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration and 6+ years of demonstrated increasingly progressive responsible financial accounting experience. Supervisory experience is a plus. Prefer a minimum of 3+ years experience with CareFirst organization and experience with the Oracle general ledger software.
Skills/Abilities: Position requires expertise in Financial Accounting and knowledge of GAAP. Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills (both written and verbal) are required as are exceptional analytical, reasoning, and problem solving skills. A strong sense of initiative, ability to work both independently and as a team member coupled with the ability to be creative in developing solutions to work situations. Requires adaptability/flexibility to supervise multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast paced/rapidly changing and quality oriented environment with a strong customer focused orientation. Requires the ability to remain calm during difficult situations and work with frequent interruptions while balancing conflicting priorities. The incumbent should be knowledgeable in the principles and techniques of effective supervision, with the ability to lead staff. Solid knowledge of PC applications such as word and excel, knowledge of access database is a plus.
Preferred: Knowledge of CareFirst operations and functions is preferred. CPA licensure and/or MBA are a plus.

The incumbent is primarily seated while performing the duties in the position. Occasional walking or standing is required. The hands are regularly used to write, type, key and handle small controls and objects. There is extensive work at a computer terminal. The associate must frequently talk and hear. The position also requires some stooping, pushing, dragging and lifting while obtaining and returning financial data, printouts and/or boxes of paper and documents. Weights of up to 40 pounds are occasionally handled.
Working in an indoor office environment, this incumbent is subject to high job stress during monthly and year-end financial close periods. Overtime may be required.
