Healthcare Sector Intelligence Manager

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Under the general supervision of the Sr. Director, Strategy & Planning, the applicant’s responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Research and analyze existing, macro and emerging healthcare regional and national trends and scenarios, technologies and industry disruptors, and derive implications for our business strategies.  Research subjects could include but are not limited to new sector mergers and acquisitions, new disruptors in the field, network models, innovative payment models, horizontal and vertical integrations of existing and emerging competitors, new and emerging technologies that improve care or reduce health insurer costs, best practices in specific aspects of care delivery, and leading companies that develop new and emerging technologies or care delivery best practices.

Manage the regular and timely synthesis of complex information and disseminate industry and sector intelligence reports on emerging trends, key developments in the industry, and disruptors to key internal stakeholders.

Manage and assist in the distilling of industry research findings into key actionable insights, clearly communicate results and recommend action items that align with or recommend changes to corporate and divisional strategies.

Develop a broad external network and build relationships with health care futurists to gain insights into health care delivery, health technology, clinical and pharmaceutical developments, population health, and insurance market structures.  Consult with subject matter experts to develop a complete understanding of the relevant trends.

Develop self at rigorous pace and work independently as role progresses and lead the unit in comparable work.  Develop, coach, mentor and lead team members for sustained individual and team performance.

Establish project goals, milestones and procedures, define roles and responsibilities on projects, acquire project resources, coordinate all projects, monitor project progress to plan, manage multiple projects simultaneously.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

The Manager will have up to three direct reports conducting similar work.  The Manager will also be responsible for coaching and mentoring less experienced members of the team.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • BA or BS degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least 6+ years in US payer or provider research OR advanced degree with combined experience in two or more of the following functions within the healthcare industry: industry development, strategic marketing, strategy & portfolio management, medical affairs
  • Experience in healthcare required. Familiarity with healthcare industry data preferred.
  • Experience in a high performing consulting, strategic planning, or finance environment, demanding a sophisticated approach to understanding strategic needs, financial/industry models, competitive trends and business impact.
  • Strategic agility, structured thinking, and intellectual curiosity.
  • Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and the full suite of Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to work independently, and/or collaboratively toward assigned objectives
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to extrapolate, and interpret answers from various sources
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Result oriented and focused on quality
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and translate complex concepts into actionable insights.
  • Self-starter, comfortable taking initiative.
  • Management experience leading and managing projects of an analytical nature
  • Experience with performing research and analysis in a functional role, preparing presentation materials, and conveying analytical content


Preferred:

  • MBA, MPH, or MS or other advanced degree related to healthcare, life sciences, or other technical field with demonstrated financial and business acumen, preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of CareFirst organization, data sources, and key metrics.
  • Creation and maintenance of a wide network of personal contacts both within CareFirst and in the external health care community for sources of information.
  • Ability to comprehend and convey business impacts of market shifts
  • Experience with developing internal and external professional networks


Must demonstrate resilience and effectively work in a fast-paced environment with frequently changing priorities, deadlines, and workloads that can be variable for long periods of time. Must be able to meet established deadlines and handle multiple customer service demands from internal customers, within set expectations for service excellence. Must be able to effectively communicate and provide positive customer service to every internal and external customer, including customers who may be demanding or otherwise challenging.
