Intern - Project Mgmt (Strategic Communications Dept.)


The FEP Operations Center® (FEPOCSM) is the leading data management and digital solution provider to the 35 Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans that participate in the Federal Employee Program® (FEP®). The FEPOC’s Strategic Communications team produces strategies, content, and events designed to increase knowledge and understanding of the value of FEPOC service offerings and solutions. Our goal is to increase awareness of, encourage adoption and compliant usage of and create appreciation for FEPOC’s solutions, activities, projects, programs, and initiatives.

The intern will join the growing strategic communications team and support the Project Manager, Strategic Communications in the following initiatives to improve the team’s service to its customers: project management, process improvement, and operations. 

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success or strong interest in one or more of the following disciplines:  project management, communications/marketing, operations, healthcare.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:  The intern will report to the Project Manager of the Strategic Communications department in Washington, DC.  The intern will play an integral role in executing work related to the long-term growth of the department and organization.

  1. Obtain a working knowledge of FEPOC processes and departments.
  2. Research and analyze best practices of strategic communications departments within healthcare and Information Technology (IT) industries.
  3. Improve existing department operations by updating and developing tools, templates, standards, processes and policies for the department.
  4. Generate clear and concise written documentation (such as standard operating procedures, templates, manuals) for department and its clients.
  5. Recommend and execute plan to organize department assets.
  6. Produce written and electronic deliverables such as reports, presentations and project plans using Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint/SharePoint and other reporting tools.
  7. Attend and contribute to meetings and department discussions.
  8. Participate in brainstorming sessions to generate ideas and evaluate strategic communication needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:  This position requires an individual working towards a bachelor’s or masters degree in an accredited college or university.  Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above.  Ideal for students seeking degrees in business/management, communications/marketing, strategic planning or healthcare administration.

We are looking for students who can work up to 15 -20 hours during the academic year and 40 hours during the summer.

Required Abilities/Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and online, internet/intranet tools and search engine.
  • Superb organization skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent research and tracking skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while simultaneously adjusting priorities.
  • Attention to detail and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to positively interface with and establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal staff and external clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including assisting with reports, manuals and written documentation.
  • Local travel may be necessary.
  • Demonstrated skills with various computer applications/software, particularly those related to the development of documents, web pages, presentations


  • An interest in health care industry and communications industry.
  • Strong editing/proofreading skills.
  • Advanced software skills.
