Vendor Management Office Director

Resp & Qualifications

PURPOSE: Provides leadership to CareFirst’s third-party vendor management strategy and execution. The Director helps to build the vendor management office at CareFirst and will collaborate with leaders and internal stakeholders across all Business Units to ensure that the management of CareFirst vendors is executed consistently and efficiently across all levels. Such strategies will be employed to reduce vendor risk, improve vendor performance, maximize the value and opportunity to improve performance, and decrease cost within vendor relationships.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general supervision of the VP, Corporate Services, Real Estate and Procurement, responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Value Creation

  • Build and lead the establishment of a vendor management office at CareFirst by providing long term vision and execution strategies from hiring and training talent to driving VMO initiatives
  • Create, maintain, and lead the delivery of policies, standards, procedures, communication and training strategies to support and sustain the Vendor Management Office
  • Establish processes that optimize CareFirst’s vendor relationships and enable efficient operations
  • Accountable for monitoring and managing CareFirst Business Units adherence to VMO requirements by providing support and assistance to the BUs with respect to vendor management oversight
  • Provides insight to business units and Executive leadership  on current vendor relationships, including spend, relationship health and vendor performance, as well as providing mitigation options for any vendor-related issues and risks
  • Assesses vendor portfolio, current and potential uses, evaluates technical roadmap to identify future needs, and establishes strategies to optimize the portfolio
  • Drives continuous process improvements that increase operational efficiency, optimizes vendor relationships, and improves customer satisfaction for the vendor management function
  • Oversee vendor segmentation process and ensure vendors are appropriately classified based on CareFirst vendor tiers

Relationship Building

  • Build and maintain an engagement model with stakeholders that is sustainable, clear and flexible
  • Actively strategize and collaborate with cross functional team leaders to align on best practices and areas of improvement in vendor management that align with overall CareFirst strategy
  • Build close cross-functional relationships across the enterprise (Business Unit, Third Party Risk Management, Legal, Procurement and other corporate functions) and be an active vocal advocate for the VMO mission and strategies
  • Provide training materials and lead training workshops for the organization on VMO activities

Staff Management

  • Hire, develop and coach members of the vendor management office


  • This position is responsible for four direct reports and up to 15 matrix staff.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Supply Chain Management or relate field In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an additional 4 years of relevant experience is required 
  • 10+ years of experience in client relationship management, strategy, planning, vendor management, consulting, strategic sourcing, supply management and procurement within the healthcare industry
  • 5+ years of progressive leadership including experience building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams
  • Proven experience in successfully leading a team in the management of vendors/third parties, including, but not limited to, policies, performance, vendor risk, relationships, contracts, and issue and dispute resolution
  • Experience working closely with senior executives,
  • Ability to understand and manage multiple priorities, with demonstrated ability to gather information needed to support strategic decisions
  • Experience delivering presentations and advisement to senior leaders


  • Thorough knowledge of vendor management best practices and trends
  • Excellent negotiation, relationship and interpersonal skills
  • Strong dispute resolution and mediation skills to handle issue escalation
  • Thorough knowledge of vendor management best practices and trends
  • Experience in leading program implementation and collaborating with functions to influence decisions and drive strategy
  • Experience in leading and grooming teams to garner the best talent and skills sets for a vendor management team
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication, change management capabilities, business acumen, project management and leadership skills
  • Ability to gain confidence of senior management in advisement
  • Ability to effectively summarize complex issues and provide effective resolutions/recommendations
  • Ability to work across a complex organization to create needed alignment and harness relationships to collaborate with business units to influence decisions and drive strategy


  • MBA or Master’s degree in business related field
