Digital UX Designer Lead

Resp & Qualifications

Reporting to the UX Manager of Digital Applications, the Digital UX Designer Lead will supervise a team of contingent workers who will help drive a vision for how digital experiences should be designed for CareFirst customers/partners, and create new product visual concepts and capabilities. The UX Designer Lead will act as the end user advocate, working with Business Analysts, Developers, and Business Stakeholders to define, test, and implement innovative solutions for the product direction, visuals, and experience.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Project Delivery
• Lead the UX design for all Market Facing Corporate Initiatives
• Lead the UX design for all CareFirst projects implemented by the Digital Applications team
• Determine which UX methodologies required at the beginning of a project in order to keep the project on-time and within budget while also making well-informed design decisions
• Create and maintain new, interactive pages on CareFirst’s website and brand assets, including new feature pages, gated content offerings and demo request pages
• UX design for all Market Facing Corporate Initiatives
• UX design for all CareFirst projects implemented by the Digital Applications team
• Identify opportunities for improved user experience based on research, testing, and site analytics
• Conduct user research and testing including but not limited to card sorting, remote usability testing, in-person interviews, and moderated usability testing
• Review and evaluate site analytics to inform design decision-making
• Conduct and oversee multivariate and A/B testing to drive UX decision-making
• Participate in design sessions with Business Analysts, Developers, and Business Stakeholders
• Create personas, user journeys, storyboards, site maps, and process flow diagrams to define and communicate the given design problem
• Deliver wireframes, low and high fidelity prototypes to the UI development team with detailed notations depicting functionality
• Collaborate with developers to understand technical constraints and deliver creative solutions
• Create and maintain stylesheet components to be used across CareFirst
• Present and defend designs and key milestone deliverables to team members and business stakeholders

• Design for a shared vision across the enterprise to ensure a quality and cohesive look and feel across digital touch points
• Establish and promote design guidelines, best practices and standards
• Participate in creating and maintaining a living style-guide accessible across business units
• Conduct and evaluate user research and testing to drive design solutions
• Conceptualize original ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex design roadblocks
• Identify opportunities for improved workflow and implement solutions
• Coaches other members of the Department and assists in training
• Identifies and implements improvements to assigned processes


• Demonstrates knowledge of the dynamically changing mobile and web technology landscape to continuously improve the user experience and keep up with market demands
• Excellent visual design skills with sensitivity to user-system interaction
• Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, HCI, Web Development or related
• Solid understanding of HTML5, CSS3 & JavaScript
• Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite & Axure RP
• Knowledge with responsive frameworks
• Self-starter that values continuous learning
• Passion for design
• Knowledge of responsive and mobile first design concepts
• 5+ years of experience
• Expert knowledge of UX methodologies
• Master’s degree in Interaction Design, HCI, Web Development or related field
• Health insurance industry exposure

• Ability to lead a team of UX designers on and offshore to ensure work is delivered on time and within brand guidelines
• Ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing technology and apply it to business needs.
• Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and persuade customers, employees, and management at all levels and thrive in a cross-functional environment.

• Ability to create original concepts and take heuristic approaches to testing/refining existing theories and to develop new system approaches to solve problems and seize opportunities to sustain busi¬ness success. 
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual skills.
• Willingness to travel to multiple locations within greater Baltimore/Washington area for meetings and time limited project work.
• Willingness to work occasional night and weekends related to project releases and key deliverables

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to think at a high level about product strategy and vision.
  • Experience on UX strategy, user researcher, user interviews, surveys and usability study. Builds personas, user journey map, empathy maps.
  • Experience on UX analysis to conduct competitive analysis, market assessments and heuristic evaluations.
  • Experience with Information Architect, taxonomies. Builds information architect, navigation schemas, search schemas and site map development.
  • Experience with web analytics and feedback data to inform infrastructure changes and design.
  • Experience with Interaction Design, interaction modeling, mental modeling. Creates user scenarios, user flow, low fidelity and high fidelity wireframes.
  • Experience with responsive design.
  • Deep knowledge of user centered design processes and methodology.
  • Experience designing web apps and mobile solutions for enterprise platforms.
  • Experience on usability test – usability test script, method, collect feedback and design improvement recommendations.
  • Advanced skill of wireframing and/or prototyping tools and methodologies.
  • Strong leadership, strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience to lead a small design team to provide design and usability guidance.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Experience in a fast-paced software environment, and an ability to execute against aggressive timelines.
  • High energy level, enthusiastic, and eager to do what is necessary to be successful.
  • Highly creative and inquisitive; able to multitask effectively.
  • Stay on top of user/customer experience trends and best practices across interaction types (web, mobile).
  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS/JavaScript; ability to speak to developers about front-end in their language.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies;
  • 5+ years design experience;
  • Experience in Adobe XD,  Axure,  Invision,  UXPin,  InDesign, Sketch;
  • Experience in usability testing tools
  • Must have an online portfolio to be considered;
